In my case my firewall is open with the ports exposed to a single IP address.

yeah that would be the preferred way to do it if you are only playing with a friend

So to be clear, my order of operations to have my buddy join my server over the internet would be.
1. port forward 3724 and 8085
2. set my firewall to only accept incoing connections from my friends IP assuming they have a fixed IP
3. ???

In your acore_auth db in the realmlist table set the address to your external IP

Interesting, this seems extremely simple and straight forward. So my friends will need to download the wow client and Hamachi. But they don't need Azerothcore do they?
