Please excuse my lack of English and the fact that I occasionally misunderstand or miss things. I hope you have lots of fun and luck with your setup. For people who don't know anything about the technology behind networks and don't feel like learning it, it's still much easier and safer to use a VPN service that's designed for exactly that purpose.

Not really, and that's the danger. Securing the ports and keeping the connection separate from the rest of your LAN requires some knowledge. And you should always do that. Search the internet for securing home servers. There are many highly decorated experts who will teach anyone who wants to listen why and, above all, how to do something like that.

Sorry to keep this conversation up, but my guy if your so conservative about your network ports and such you better of purchasing a VPS with a monthly coast where you can open the ports freely with out being afraid of danger, in your specific case I think a 20-30$ a month purchase will save you from the hassle
