The old noggit versions that had support for older clients is borderline useless

I am probably coming at this from the opposite way around to most people in that I actually have a formal education in programming - the gaping holes in my knowledge are overwhelmingly on the WoW structure side of things haha

that's a very good start, file formats are documented here: <https://wowdev.wiki/Main_Page>

Based on what you <@787614711738138634> and <@169121237539356673> have said though, since I am not necessarily completely attached to perfect vanilla simulation, it might make more sense for me to cull access to >vanilla content so that I have easier access to tools than starting from the other way around!

Ah, thank you!

there are people around who are interested in supporting vanilla development and they should be able to tell you all the things you'd need to do to tools like noggit for everything to work out, and you can probably work off the existing fork that was left unfinished. it's still a fairly big undertaking to actually do that, so you should weight your options first

Yeah I think either way is going to be a fairly substantial undertaking (that is to say, "downgrading" a WotLK server/client to only give access to vanilla content and adding back removed things vs. trying to find a network of people interested in vanilla development and retrofitting all the tools), so like you say I have some decisions to make! Thank you very much for your help though; these last couple of weeks have been stepping in to a very wide and very old world with many crossed wires to try to get to grips with, and you have helped me a lot with that!

From a content perspective it's relatively simple

You can take the quests, creatures etc from any 1.12 database and massage the structure a little to fit a 3.3.5 emulator

You could technically do the same with talents and what not, base it off of the 1.12 data and make it fit the structure expected in 3.3.5
