Ok, thank you very much! Is it known that such scripts to backport map files _exist_? And do you happen to know off-hand any map editors which will load vanilla maps directly?

i believe that there is a script somewhere that can 'somewhat' backport wotlk maps to vanilla, but results may vary. there is also a fork of noggit that does the same thing, but that one also had a few issues and only works on wotlk maps that you then move over to a vanilla client.

generally, while tools and scripts sometimes exist to solve specific problems, on any version other than wotlk you can't really rely on tooling to cover your exact use case, and you'll need a deeper understanding of the file formats and how to manipulate them to be comfortable doing any edit you might need - what incidentally works in one project might not work for another even for such basic things like map editing

that's also true for more elaborate edits on wotlk as well, but there's at least tools for most of the 'basic' edits most people want to do

unfortunately, sometimes that's a very advanced level of understanding required to even do simple things on non-wotlk versions

Yeah, so it is seeming; it's very unfortunate, because I don't especially have any big projects I want to undertake in WotLK which would facilitate becoming really familiar and comfortable with the file types and pipelines, so I'd have to conjure up a project I have no real passion for to develop for WotLK, to then leverage that understanding to try to make the project I _actually_ have passion for in vanilla - that's kind of a hard sell to my brain's motivation haha

But I appreciate you helping me to get a feel for the modding scene, what is and isn't both possible and "simple"

You can always use 3.3.5 as the framework but remove anything > classic and port features from classic over to 3.3.5

i don't think it's so much down to "doing a project on wotlk" at that stage, but it does force you to become a programmer or at least comfortable reading/editing binary files if you aren't already. then it's pretty much just going straight to the wowdev wiki, learning all the file format differences and being ready to edit the tools for your purposes on the version you want to mod

it _is_ also possible that some of the very old noggit versions are still around and I believe those had support for pre-wotlk maps, but it's going to end up in a much more manual process in either case. that's why many even larger projects opt for the wotlk client and just edit the game to be closer to vanilla instead of going with an exact replica
