I also wrote https://github.com/stoneharry/WoW-Map-Asset-Parser which may or may not be helpful. It can parse a map to find the objects used and the textures within those objects.

Ah that's actually great. I was thinking I might start with editing a small, contained instanced area. Something like Violet Hold, or Nagrand Arena

A quick look at your repo raises a question. Your readme says that it requires the data to be "outside of .mpqs." Is there something I need to do to the 3.3.5a client before starting? Unpack it somehow?
