So you will need to construct file in a way that will control selected bones on the weapon you want

Seems a bit above my paygrade and something I'll have to learn later, but I think I may be able to achieve the effect by borrowing the phys of a similar staff and weighing my weapon to it's armature. Thanks as always for being helpful here!
