I just have to find out how to get the model from the object instance

The way I would do it is:

Get the 2d screenspace min and max extents of the selection box.

TO START WITH, for every object, get their 3d placement position, convert it to 2d screenspace (using the modelview projection matrix) and check if it is within the selection box.

Once you have that confirmed working so you can rule out any matrix math issues, instead of doing this only for the placement position of the object, do it for every corner of the bounding box.

Once THAT works you need to cover the case where the selection box is inside the extents, but no vertices of the extents is inside the bounding box. To do this you pretty much just flip the test and try the corners of the selection box against the bounding box vertices.
