I am a noob so I did it like, I had the model up, then went through each one of the veritcles and did the add modifier decimate then .5 as the value. I couldn't figure out how to do to all of them at once

If you can I would recommend you to use the latest version of blender as what you have is very outdated. But here is a vid that may help you for your version
