Yeah, you can run multiple worldservers per realm. Each worldserver is responsible for specific maps assigned to it by the servers registry. For example, you can have one worldserver for Kalimdor, one for Northrend, and so on. Map distribution is dynamic, so if one worldserver crashes, the servers registry detects the event and redistributes the maps among the remaining active worldservers. Players won’t be disconnected from the game in that case.

In addition to worldservers, there are also smaller servers/services for things like guild, mail, etc. These smaller services are implemented in Go, not C++.
