But even without it its not really redundant. the 'main' server should also not store all those data if you split it anyways

a monolith can handle 10k+ players if properly optimized.
a half assed distrubted setup i would imagine could easily triple/quadruple that

It's not about the need of that. When you already work on such a system where you split services or lets say a modular monolith it makes already sense to let a socket server handle such things.

I do understand the point, but there is such a thing as being needlessly over-engineered. ever heard the saying the best part is no part? I think people don't apply that to programming enough
