first thing that you can do for sure is install the latest docker compose. version 2+ is a hard requirement

As long as the synology is x86_64 it should have no problems (barring glibc, then we're hosed), thanks Golang

OK. As an alternative solution, i have gotten around sysnolgy / docker issues in the past by creating a generic linux docker container, and then installing apps and services inside the container as if it was a stand alone linux box. There may be a little extra overhead this way, but it would be able to run all packages at newest versions and bypass the softwar elimits of the synology. What do you think of this approach?

yeah, that's perfectly fine and doable. you can basically do a "classic install", just inside of a docker container.

big things to be aware of, of course is that some things may not be saved, but thats happens

If i did it this way, i wouldnt want important parts of the wow server saved inside the container, i would need to map local folders so that data is saved to the NAS.

yeah. On a super high level, the most important stuff is going to be your custom stuff.
`data/sql/custom`
`env/dist`
`modules`
I personally would run the database as a separate container as well, but that's up to you, of course
