It depends on what types of changes are made. There are changes that can be made in the emulator, and others that require them to be made in the emulator and the game client.

You can use keira's channel if you want, or you can ask here. This channel is for general support.

I see, I am just trying to edit the damage of weapons as well as just change existing attributes of items. Is there documentation on that somewhere on the wiki so I can cover all my bases?

Are you changing the damage values basically? If you change it in the emulator, most likely, the game client will continue to maintain the previous values, but, although the client does not see the changes, that does not mean that they do not occur. The damage is likely to change, you just won't see it visually.

Regarding whether there is documentation, perhaps you can obtain it in a community that is responsible for customizing the client, such as wow-modding. Here, most likely, you will receive advice on the emulator, and the modules that exist and are created by the community. But I don't know if there are really many people who work on the game client, and who can give you that type of information.

Ok that makes sense, so if I make changes they may not appear in the item but they will still be changed in the background

It is probable. You can check it by killing a creature, and seeing if its base damage has changed or if it remains the same.

Really all I am doing is just making a set of items that will allow for my player to do more damage and take less damage.
