If there are small edits it should be fine but if you only update once every 6 months you're dealing with what is most likely a huge amount of changed headers forcing a large amount of files to be recompiled.

You shouldn't do it either way. If it's not using the resources you might as well have it accessible for other tasks. If it wasn't a PC you used outside of VMs it would be a different story.
