I guess I have to ask, is this client and server something you plan to release to the public or keep it all behind closed doors and/or release to specific people?

Even my GM client will be public at some point. I'm just not ready to release it yet. I'm using some Blizzard assets and I don't want to get into trouble with their lawyers and I want to release some sort of documentation so people can mod their emulators to support it before I release the code.

That makes sense. If it's possible for someone to get the assets without you distributing them as well, as long as they're told how, you shouldn't include them yourself.

I thought about just setting the icon as a placeholder and telling people to change the icon if they care, as an optional step. I could also probably set the icon automatically but I haven't thought that through yet.

The sad truth is that we've seen so many talk about stuff they're developing and then just vanish into thin air, I'm sure you understand that, so it's usually best to be a bit careful with expectations until it can be seen. If it should come to that, the only thing I can offer is testing.
