probably because you know what you're doing and you're properly securing your stuff. but nobody who doesn't know exactly what they're doing should just open ports from their home LAN to the internet and dont monitor anything. that would be reckless. every standard user just wants to play and knows almost nothing about such things. that's why I say just use VPN. it's easy and they can get started straight away without having to worry about anything. and those of us who enjoy such things and the work can of course do it. I've hosted a number of online services myself, including for a few companies. websites, lots of game servers, Nextcloud, media servers and much more. so I know what a pain in the ass it can be to secure something like that.

We're talking about a service that isn't advertised, it's not posted anywhere. I have no need for extra security because I just get the occasional port scanner, and in 3 years I have yet to see any worse happen.

I'm really happy for you. If that's security enough for you, then have fun with it. The provider that hosts your server in the data center also filters a lot of unwanted traffic that hasn't even reached your server, port scans, etc. The home network needs a bit more security.

You don't have to advertise open ports so that hackers from countries that don't give a shit on what they do can find the ports and exploit all kinds of security holes that all systems have. There are more than enough reports about it. Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it isn't dangerous!
