I learned it by watching how Blizzard did it. I picked out a mount and then looked in the other DBCs using the SoundID in the creaturemodeldata.dbc and then it took me a few tries until it worked.

But once you understand the system it's not difficult. But different rules and a different DBC apply to NPCs. The IDs then go into the NPCSounds.dbc and the ID of them then goes into the creaturedisplay.info because you can then give the NPC the sound individually. Globally always in the creaturemodeldata.dbc
