Hm I see, that's interesting; I had heard that some vanilla private servers ran on WotLK clients, I presume that's why?

Yes they use wrath server/wrath client and make changes to keep all of the wrath support but still realize their vision

wotlk has allround much better tooling (modding scene is _much_ older than the vanilla modding scene), better client and most of the base game intact at an "acceptable" level. vanilla modders mostly just backport (ironically relevant for this channel) wotlk tools and do their own thing, so the servers you see are the ones with the expertise/budget to do that

still, it's not impossible to work with, but will usually involve working with a wotlk client and learning how to get those changes back into the vanilla client, so it's an extra step for each thing you want to do

Sorry to keep bothering you, but to clarify - are you saying that vanilla modding communities tend to develop on WotLK tools, then put the modifications through some "back porting" process to deply on vanilla servers? Or that vanilla modding communities have their own backported versions of the WotLK _tools_ and use them to make content to deploy straight to vanilla?

This suggests an answer to my question

probably a mix of both, most of the tools those servers have are not open source / private

as far as emulators go, there are open source projects for vanilla, but for client modding like 90%+ of open source / public projects are wotlk

Riiiight ok, so they are generally quite closed individual teams with their own tools and workflows
