As for how you actually retroport the .m2 and .skin etc that's a whole other topic. But your assumption that you'll basically have to recreate the DBC side of things is correct.

im not diving into retroporting myself im just using what is available and hopefully it wont be broken (too much)

I've never needed to grab anything > cataclysm and they seem to just work fine out of the box which means my laziness can be happy

I believe anything past legion becomes quite challenging to backport, a lot of manual fixing up. But I'm not familiar

That's basically what I know just from reading here too. Legion or below at most just run through a couple tools for M2's and done.
