Then at some point they replaced the hand rolled netmessage code with JAM and it started going in a different direction from that point on, as far as 'legacy' modding is concerned.

Patch 3.3.5 was released June, 2010. It's been 15 years since then, any software project still in active development would completely and utterly change in 15 years. Software moves fast.

Especially when almost no one from the original team works there anymore. You can clearly tell when analyzing modern builds.
