for the alpha client the MPQ archives were pretty simple.
compression was done with zlib, default level and 32kib window.
in the wotlk client they used the smallest possible window to contain the sector data (max 4kib, since that's usually their sector size.
they compressed with different compression level filters for the patch*.MPQ files, compared to the others:
patch*.MPQ files: everything uses `default`, except `fastest` for .wfx, .delete, .blob, .what, .uvw, .wav, .m2, .skin, .blp, .anim, .txt, .bls, .wdl, .wdt, .wmo, .wtf, .adt, .trs, signaturefile (sorry it's not sorted lol)
all other MPQ files: .wav files use `fastest` level, everything else `default`
