I've had too many positive experiences in a game like Hell Let Loose (50v50) that is designed with PVP hierarchal structures in mind to ever be convinced that it doesn't have the potential for amazing experiences.
The amount of games I've had in HLL where a commander and squad leaders are communicating information and relaying that to their respective squads that ends up turning the tide of a battle is evidence that this can be done well.
The games many have highlighted here implement it lazily and without consideration for impact, but having party and proximity chat in a game where coordination is key cannot be replaced by anything short of fully-integrated and purposefully designed voice chat, positional or otherwise.

But why would you spend time doing that when you can have an addon that tells you you're too close, in a much more efficient and informative way
