Haven't personally delved into the culling for WMOs as Novus is not really attempting to tackle that aspect, we do our own thing

I do however know as you seem to, that there are portals and anti portals. I do also believe that there are culling based on what group you're in, so it figures out what groups you can, and cannot see without checking the individual objects first (I do believe this is not part of the portal culling)
