If I have the object already listed in the mmdx I can theoretically swap it by just moving changing the mmdf nameid?

Ish. The issue is that the models need to be referenced in all chunks that have a part of it on it, see MCRF. WMOs additionally have extents of the model in the MODF chunk which also depend on size of wmo.
If the new model is the same size or smaller it will be fine. If it is bigger it might break.

So if the model went from being entirely contained in one chunk, to overlapping multiple it would break the whole adt?

I'm swapping trees at the moment so they are relatively the same size

It would break collision and rendering of that model

Rendering should be fine for M2s actually, but collision should break
