I would prefer it like others do it: You can pay e.g. 30€/month and when u stop paying u just dont get updates anymore, u still can use ur old version

I had some trouble with gimp too, but it's the name I had in my head at the time) and given an appropriately sized and set up image document, covert one image file back to multiple ADTs. That could either be written entirely as an extension or as a separate program to do the ADT interactions. My point is it wood be easier for me to do that than writing a full custom image editor - rely on other image editing tools.
