I'm guessing it can be used for all forms of "the" because that would not make sense if you could only abbreviate "dem" and not der, das, or the other ones

But truth is you can only abbreviate "dem". Because the other possible variants for use with abbreviation would sound weird. In den, e.g.. There is no way you can shorten that.
