you could always break some bytes and rewrite then with the launcher

what GPU are you using ? intel/amd don't support old games as well.
best bet is using dxvk

Can confirm than dxvk is working great to improve performance and rendering, on 3.3.5a. Don't know for 1.12.1 though.
