Checkerboard is a common thing implemented into engines that process graphics (Whether that be a design software, game or whatever), it usually denotes that a texture is missing or could not be loaded, we'd need more information, perhaps you could check noggit's log.txt file? It should say things about missing BLP files in the logs.

It can also be there for a clean slate project too, but that's not the case with noggit.
