To be honest, MPQ never made sense to me, you're just layering data over the same data, over the same data, over the same data, in a virtual filesystem established and used by the WoW client, all in the name of what Blizzard calls a "patch system", I mean... that's... 1) Redundant files (older ones) where not actually needed 2) Data duplications (This is bad, it takes up disk space, it's bad for indexing, other issues), a system could've easily been come up with where the older files in WoW clients are just replaced upon patching over than overlayed over, filesystem overlaying has its purposes, I don't believe it serves a valid/ideal purpose in patching software.
