I read a lot of technical whitepapers too, it's the only way I could get to where I am today with knowledge, it literally is the only way, read good quality material wrote by others so you can learn, or attempt to reverse engineer whatever situation may be, and I'm not just talking about software either, I mean, you could reverse engineer a mere physical object.
