One thing they could have done was add an addendum in whatever contributor agreement there is and say "hey you also agree to license your code as GPLv2 or later if we decide to relicense in a bit" while they work through the backlog of people to ask to relicense

im not rly fan of this argument "u did wrong fix it" "u cant fix it" so community is upset that they did it and hate them and if it was to be fixed then community hates them again for fixing it
