I wonder if that has something to do with those specific cases. Honestly no idea, but I suppose goofing with a spell texture like that until you troubleshoot why it no longer displays might reveal what step you might alter in your automation to ensure they all work.

I've never seen any texture upscaling that's not either not noticeable or a downgrade

when it's noticeably different it's always weirdly smooth with a loss of details
