Although to be honest load times in retail are really long for some reason, even in old areas

I've heard load times in wow are mostly related to CPU, not disk

It's more optimised, but then uses that headroom to improve visuals.
Eg even in the "old areas" your view distance is a huge amount higher than before, so more adt's loaded in, more textures, etc.
