Hi guys, curious of one thing as I'm still confused, let's assume we're using the 3.3.5 client, we're adding a custom item into the server database, now we're getting the item with the red question mark. Adding it into the server .dbc would solve the red question mark icon problem, but we're still missing that item information from game client .dbc, what issues can that further generate?

The only thing that really solves the red question mark issue is to update the game client's dbc file. This is typically done by creating a new .mpq patch.
The issues that occur when you do not do this, is for example being unable to attack with the weapon, because the client does not think it has a weapon in its hands. Items can't be right clicked etc.

There are certain item ids as far as I know that are unused, and are defined in the item.dbc file already, if you collect all of those, you'll have a list of ids you "can" use, but their displayid will be preset in the item.dbc, which isn't ideal either.

Alright, but I remember back in TBC that wasn't a problem, what was different back then?

Likely what I wrote above was utilized

Reusing existing item ids is a common practice to avoid having to use a custom patch

Was more curious what has changed through WOTLK logic, years ago when I started modding (TBC), that issue didn't existed, you could only generate the item from WOWV and add it into the DB

I don't believe this has ever been the case, but perhaps someone else can chip in

there is a modded exe for both tbc and wotlk that removes the need for item.dbc
