Just found an article from 2013 answering to my question: only after 3.2.2 the items got hard-linked into DBCs... I remember very well that wasn't the case back then...

it might've been something else, just remembered that there was some kind of patch made in the tbc client that was ported to wotlk and i remembered it as that patch

I recall running my 1.12.1 server didn't require DBC edits/entries for custom items. It was entirely server database driven.
