I remember Mark Kern, the former WoW dev, mentioning at some point that they've started archiving all the stuff they developed since at least Vanilla.

They have full version control, it was just a bad attempt at weaseling their way out of not having to update all the old data to work with a newer client and server.

Porting that data cost a lot of time and money, you could argue that it was worth it considering how many subs they regained for a good half a decade, but that was a gamble.
