Then it goes Gamma (intensify everything so weaker grey bits become stronger white bits) -> Clamp (reduce brightness so it's a similar shade throughout)

That's just vertex colours. Alphamaps are really confusing and a pain to set up.

As yeah, you need to really crank up the grey bits. Alpha maps should mostly be pure white where you want textures to go

And blurred at the edges, so they blend in with others ok. Otherwise it's very obvious where the textures begin/end
