I just copied that line in creaturedisplayinfo dbc and pasted it into a new line(980002) with the new blp texture listed.

So basically did that, added the blp into the creature folder in my patch, have the dbc in my patch, added the line with 980002 into creature_model_info in my db.

Yeah, not having the updated DBCs in your server DBC files or missing creature_model_info are really the only things I can think of that would cause it to work on morph but not setting the model on a creature in DB.
