so far i believe php cant work with binary in any way so even if mysql can send me it as binary it wont do anything

I would be worried that this doesn't work in all scenarios. The DBC data isn't always perfect or consistent. All DBC readers I've seen thus far read 1 char at a time from the offset until a null terminator is found

yeah, you cannot do that at all, the string block can be in any arbitrary order

and part of the purpose of the string block is that multiple pointers can go towards the same string

Yep that's why blizzlike DBC can be lighter or heavier depending on if the string block is optimised

tbh we do as well because compressing is too slow, though there should probably be a memory saving mode as well
