I don't think it's an ORGANIZATION per se, but a lot of the stuff that gets commissioned is eventually released for cheap or free

I don't own anything of that sort. The things I purchased from Alastor, I released to the public as a gift. So, you could hire Alastor for probably 5$ to get that model working.

You're right that it's just Blizzards data - but it takes someone some effort to retroport them. You're not per se buying the model, you're purchasing their services with their retroport capabilities. Most things can be automatically retroported with a script, but Alastor knows how to do them manually and can retroport models these auto converters cannot fix.
