working with the exe is mostly generic reverse engineering (basic understanding of assembly language is required). you're generally looking at learning a program like IDA pro or ghidra (the former is more commonly used in wow modding).

once you understand the basics of using a program like that, the wowdev wiki is where you go for documentation on the game:

Well I know I can make it *appear* to be a fractured ground, but I'm more concerned with making it behave as an area of effect spell with the same shape

if you're _new_ to assembly i'd strongly recommend that you get a version of IDA that supports decompilation into C-like sources as well, it makes things a lot easier to navigate, even if you still need to know the underlying assembly to make much use of it
