is it a mistake to spend resources on proper security measures and anticheat if some people will be able to bypass them with enough effort ?

it's not like I wanted to do that for a giant server with thousands of players either, for a small community there's a lot less chances of having someone knowledgable and determined enough to do it

I mean, the point I'm trying to make is that this isn't a proper security or anti-cheat measure. It's just obfuscation which doesn't really help.

Well I guess we don't have the same definition of help then

It doesn't stop any of the behaviours or actions you want to prevent, it just delays a minority of people being able to do it. You need to try and detect malicious actions server-side and flag it up. Most anti-cheat systems in WoW have a threshold where when a player triggers a potential violation enough times they get kicked/ban. You can configure this to report to Discord/GMs etc. It works pretty well for 90% of cases.

Bots on the other hand are even harder to detect and often require client scans to help try and detect it

I have never said it was to replace cheat detection in the first place

`you can if you have a launcher that talks to your server, or at least has a way to be synced and does memory edit in real time to change the version`
`having to re-download the exe each time isn't appealing`
I guess I was just extremely confused by these statements. Seems like you are sacrificing the ability to patch your client in favour of obfuscating a couple of public hacks.

it's not sacrificing anything though

Yeah I don't understand your processes. The client build is used for patching, if you start randomising it and not downloading new exe's I don't understand how you can patch your client. Unless you use your own software that is required to be downloaded and run to manage the client
