**cmake**
configure: runs your project-specific cmake scripts, installs dependencies etc.
generate: generates visual studio-specific files from the configured dependencies and configs. You almost always run these together, configure first and then generate. You very rarely run one without running the other

**visual studio**
build/compile: actually turns cpp/header files into the authserver/worldserver executables.

**what to run when**
usually, whenever you add/remove any new files or configurations/build flags you need to both "configure" and "generate" in cmake and then "build" in visual studio. If you only change existing files, it's enough to build in visual studio

technical detail, visual studio refers to the entire thing as a "solution" (azerothcore-wotlk), and the individual components as "projects" (argon2, authserver, common, database, Detour etc)

I originally started my project as an AC module before pivoting. Would recommend as it is a great way to isolate stuff, a capacity to add new hooks to the core also helps for if you hit a wall with what it can do out of the box but otherwise it's nice abstraction.
