AFAIK they're models that copy the position and rotation of some specified attachment point on one of the bones of the character model

aside from that they're static. Like, make a weapon that uses the murloc model and you'll see what's going on pretty quicky. The murloc just stands in your hand, but follows the position of you hand when you swing your weapon
