they wouldn't be compatible with your core, and we set up paths very differently so you can't use them the same way. the error you're getting most often happens if you download a repository on github with the "download zip" option. You should never use that, always do `git clone <clone url>`

it's more that they expect very different command line arguments that we pass from a completely different script, it's very likely something would go wrong when running them outside our expected environment that it's not really worth the trouble instead of grabbing the latest upstream
