make 2 layers and then edit the second layer however you wish, but then go under "layer" and go to "transparency" and then to "color to alpha"
That'll allow you to restore detail after you alter the image and you can do it however many times is needed til you tweak it just right Just make sure the transparent layer is above the original gg
