Since Legion it's possible to place M2 and WMOs through WDL. In Legion it was used for corrupted World Tree and Dalaran WMOs as well as FX for Black Tower

SL added SkyScenes. That's the 4th way. See MSSN/MSSC/MSSO in WDL. As far as I know these are only used in SL map (2222) for stuff like Torghast in the background of Maw zone
