There isn't much to discuss about it, like maybe the way these 2 grids overlap makes LODing or something easier, but you can't argue that 256x256 is lower resolution than 128x128

Yes and no. I thought so too before. But by going with a normal grid while keeping the n_vertices comparatively the same would get you a much smoother grid at LOD level 0.
