From editing it constantly? Not optimised storage (wasted space)
From listfile corruption? Hard to say, likely not a lot.

There's plenty of ways to develop without using MPQs, I would recommend only packaging when you are ready to deploy

Something I only learnt relatively recently is that you can actually make a folder called `patch-4.MPQ` for example, and it will load that fine. It doesn't have to be in a MPQ format. Alternatively you can edit the WoW binary to load local files (documented on Modcraft)
