AWS can be very daunting because it's so large and in depth.
But if you basically want "Gimme a linux box with X cpu cores and Y ram" and control of ports easily would recommend DO.

i think it's unlikely to be port forwarding because you'd never get far enough to get disconnected in the first place, i don't remember the thing that usually causes that
