Yeah, that's unfortunately the problem with targeting players there's no way to target a player specifically, if he is not directly responsible for triggering the event, which in this case, he isn't.

You can try to play around with:
SMART_ACTION_STORE_TARGET_LIST - 64
and
SMART_TARGET_STORED - 12
though I never personaly used those, so I can't offer much information about those.

You might be able to store the player as a target, in case he interacts with the NPC directly, before the killing takes place.
